Using UpSnap to access gaming desktop
To begin this off, I am very particular about leaving my gaming desktop running due to energy and heating from the desktop. I normally turn off after using (I know this isn't a huge deal in 2025 but I do it anyways).
I needed a way to turn on my desktop when I was away from home. I had Wake-on-Lan configured and setup but no way to actually send the command to turn on. I didn't want to use a Paid or cloud service. This search led me to the the /r/selfhosted subreddit (which is great) and I found Upsnap.
Unsnap is a simple and easy tool to check on devices' status and send out wake on lan packets. I deployed my Docker container on my Synology NAS and added my gaming desktop:
I access the webpage by using Tailscale to connect to my home network. I toggle the device on and I can easily remote in or game away from my desk (I use Moonlight).
The deployment was simple and adding the device took 30 seconds as the only info you need is a name and the IP.
